Patio Lights Add Ambiance And Safety To An Outdoor Living Space
Patio lights are a great way to extend the use of outdoor space into the evening hours when it would otherwise be too dark. They can also add ambiance and drama to the space, especially for parties. In addition, patio lights can make the patio and surrounding area a safer place to be after dark, because objects that could be easily run into or tripped over will also be illuminated.
Some of the options for patio lighting are reviewed below:
Deck lights are a good way to highlight patio edges or drop offs. These make good patio lights because they are intended to be concealed beneath railings or benches and provide subtle illumination that add both drama and safety.
Step lights are just what you’d expect–lights to illuminate steps or stepping stones so that the patio and yard can be easily navigated. These lights are also a subtle lighting solution that can even be recessed into the steps. You can also use patio string lights to accent the patio railing, giving the patio a border effect.
If your patio has a water feature on it or nearby, consider adding patio lights that will enhance that feature at night. Use underwater lights to add drama or colored lights that add character and can be changed to suit the season or the homeowner’s mood.
Use patio lights to add shadows. This type of lighting technique is achieved by placing the patio lights in front of a tree, fountain, statue, or other object to be highlighted. In this position a shadow of the object will be cast. If the goal is to have large shadows, place the light close to the object; the farther away the light is placed, the smaller the shadow produced will be. A good way to achieve this effect, is to use solar patio lights. These outdoor patio lights are easy to place and do not require running electrical wire.
Another dramatic effect that can be achieved with patio lights is to create silhouettes. This is as easy as placing the light behind the object and aiming it toward a vertical structure such as the side of the house or a privacy wall.
Creating the effect of moon light is a dramatic and romantic use of patio lights. Moon light can be achieved by placing the patio light high above the patio on a tree or other vertical surface and shine them downward onto the patio. If the light is shining through the limbs of a tree the effect is even more realistic because the moonlight effect is present, but the fixture is more hidden. You can also use patio umbrella lights to achieve this effect as well.
These are just a few of the ways that outdoor patio lighting can be used to enhance an outdoor space. When deciding how to optimally use patio lights, spend some time researching the options and planning light placement to ensure the lights provide the desired effects.
